After moving to Galway I'm without broadband again, the best I can get is ISDN. So getting a connection to the Wan was
the obvious choice. A lashing kit, 10 feet pole, waterproof box with WRAP mounted in it and the 16.5db Pacific
Wireless yagi should do the trick to get a connection across Galway Bay. The WRAP is running StarOS and
powered via PoE.

|
After a few days later, the yagi rigged into the right position and the 10db Comet omni on the top, ladders gone
of course. The network cable is run over the roof on the back of the house.
|
In the meanwhile, another antenna (Andrew DL-2412 Microceptor)
has been added. I've taken the pole of the roof again to update the BIOS of the original Wrap to support
PXE network booting and to add another Wrap to drive the additional antenna. The plan is also to add a
26db 5.8 GHz parabolic grid aerial.
On the right the pole in the yard, with 3 aerials: Comet 10db omni, 16.5dbi PacWireless yagi and 13db Andrew panel, plus
a waterproof box that contains the Wrap board.

The waterproof box mounted on the pole itself. The antenna connectors are not waterproofed yet.

The WRAP mounted in the waterproof box.

The Comet 10db omni's have a very good reputation, they are not so massive, very light and tidy. Also their mounting brackets are well thought through.
Brackets and piece of pipe are mounted on the pole, cable is run through pipe and connected to omni, omni and cable is pusched back onto
the pipe and closes perfectly on top of it. The omni then is fixed with a screw. Waterproofing not necessary, still a good idea though.

I'm trying to mount a second WRAP in the box, to drive 2 more antennas.
Originally I wanted to avoid to run a second cable up the roof. I replaced the 12v powersupply with a
18v one and cabled the second WRAP piggyback to the first one plus a crossover network cable.
The voltage drop is around 1-2v from one board to the other, so no trouble there.
The boards can be powered that way, unfortunatly tests have shown, that there is not enough power
for the wireless cards, so that they will produce poor signal.
One WRAP in this setup is running StarOS, the other one Pebble, which is booted via PXE and NFS.
The cards installed in the WRAPs are 2 CM9's, one older Atheros chipset (5212) based card and a
Senao Prism based card.

This is what my livingroom looks like, when I'm trying to test things :o). Good there is no one around to complain.
|
|
I've set the pole up in my backyard, while I'm testing things. The SNR varies between 12 and 15, where i usually get something like 17 to 20,
but speeds are down to 1-2 MBit, instead of 5.5-11 MBit. Not optimal, but more handy, while I'm experimenting.

Automated Pole Theft Alarm System. Status: Alseep. :o)

The second WRAP was mounted in the waterproof box. Cabletie-bases hold it in the door. The additional pigtails still will have to be mounted.
The piggyback powering of one WRAP on the other will work, but it will not provide enough power for the wireless cards. The radio will simply not reach very far.
Seperate power has to be run for the second WRAP.

PXELINUX in the process of PXE booting Linux on the WRAP.

|
|
Debian Woody (actually Pebble) fully booted via PXE/NFS on the WRAP, that is connected via crossover cable to the other WRAP.

It's getting nasty. Mouting additional pigtails for the second WRAP.

Closed box with 4 pigtails. One of the connectors has allready been waterproofed with heatshrink.
